In the bustling town of Emali, Makueni County, Eden Mall faced a common yet costly challenge: soaring electricity bills driven by rising commercial energy tariffs and frequent blackouts. Seeking a long-term, cost-effective solution, the mall’s proprietor, Mr. James Mbaluku, entrusted ALKIM Green Galaxy with designing a custom solar energy system to reduce the mall’s dependence on grid power during daytime operations.

Solar Components Used in the Eden Mall Project
The system comprised of; 60 pcs of 620W Tier-1 Monocrystalline Solar Panels (Totaling 37.2kWp), 30kW 3-phase Hybrid Inverter, custom-designed ground-mounted carport structures and a provision for future battery energy storage integration.
What a 30kW Solar System Can Power in a Mall (Daytime Use)
The system is able to power Common Area & Essential Services including lighting for corridors, stairwells, lobbies, and washrooms (LED-based),CCTV surveillance systems, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and security sensors, water pumps (for rooftop tanks or washrooms), small elevators or escalators (depending on energy usage profile),display screens and signage, POS machines, refrigeration units for beverages or pre-prepared foods,cash registers and backup systems.
Project Summary
Mr. Mbaluku's vision was clear; to cut down on electricity bills without compromising the operational needs of a vibrant shopping mall. After a site assessment, our team designed a ground-mounted solar carport system that not only maximized solar exposure but also offered functional shaded parking for customers and tenants. The 30kW hybrid inverter acts as a grid-tied system, intelligently managing solar production during the day and seamlessly switching to KPLC power during the night or overcast conditions. The client also plans to incorporate battery storage in the next phase, ensuring complete energy independence, even at night.
